The kids in the hall

Tomorrow I’m going to the Riverside Theater to watch the sketch comedy of “The kids in the hall.” For those of you that don’t know the show, it was a revolutionary sketch comedy show that aired for five seasons on HBO. Very similar to the comedy of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, with a quirky, nonsensical, and at times outlandish style. All of the original five members will surely be doing some of their most famous sketches like the chicken lady and the guy who’s crushing your head, but will also probably do a lot of improv and new material. I feel that sketch comedy is such an important part of our media culture, because it has the ability to point out and mock reality and the everyday issues and entertainment we deal with. I remember going to see The Dead Alewives in Milwaukee and how they were very uncensored and raw, plus they always featured local music between their set breaks. It seems that SNL, madtv and sketch comedy as a whole isn’t what it used to be and we need another sketch comedy show that pushes the cultural boundaries like “The Kids in the hall” did, but for the next generation
